The Chicago Underground Tour is unlike any other tour available in Chicago. Discover the unders and behinds of the city. This tour will take you under the surface of the city to visit the vast system of underground roads and tunnels of Chicago.
In the 1850's, Chicago was literally raised above ground to insert our sewer systems, at some points up to 14 feet. In the 1920's, the streets were elevated to add an entire network of streets under the grade level streets. By 1951, when the subway systems were completed, the city began construction of the Pedway, the underground network of interlinking tunnels spanning some 40 blocks.
On the Chicago Underground Tour you will learn about the architecture of the city and the role of the Chicago Plan of 1909 in creating a multi-level metropolis. This tour will take you underneath the Michigan Avenue Bridge, the lower levels of Wacker Drive, the Chicago Riverwalk, and the Pedway to see the spectacular infrastructure of the City that Works. It's mysterious, it's enlightening, you'll love it. Explore what really makes up the Urban Fabric of Chicago.
The meeting location for the Chicago Underground Tour is in front of the main entrance of the NBC Tower, located at 455 N Cityfront Plaza Drive, Chicago IL, 60611.
