Length: Approximately 2 hours
The Signature Chicago Architecture Walking Tour is a brilliant way to see the sights and sounds of Chicago. You can never truly understand the nature of a city like Chicago unless you take the time to walk its streets. Unlike the many bus tours and boat tours of Chicago, an architectural and historical walking tour like this allows for the opportunity to stop in front of the buildings and ponder them, question them, and discuss them. This is not your typical lecture tour, it's a conversational tour. Patrons have the opportunity to ask questions and put in their own comments and observations if they choose to. On this Chicago architecture tour, you will gain an understanding of the evolution of Chicago as a city and as an architectural mecca. You will learn how events such as the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 forever changed the fervor and spirit of Chicago and created a blank slate for famous national and international architects.
You will learn about the stylistic shifts of architecture from one decade to the next and gain an understanding of how a city with such a diverse architectural landscape can achieve visual continuity like no other city in the world. You will experience the specific styles of Chicago architecture including Richardsonian Romanesque, the Chicago School of Architecture, the Prairie School of Architecture, Art Deco, Historic Revivalism, the Neo-Classical and Beaux-Arts styles influenced by the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, modern architecture, post modern architecture, and technological architecture. These styles were shaped by some of the greatest architects and architectural firms in the world including Daniel Burnham, Louis Sullivan, Holabird & Roche, Holabird & Root, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Henry Ives Cobb, Bruce Graham, Adrian Smith, Fazlur Khan, Skidmore Owings and Merril, Frank Gehry, and Renzo Piano. Don't miss this chance to take the most comprehensive, all encompassing Chicago architecture tour that 2 hours can offer.
Each Signature Architecture Walking Tour of Chicago begins with an interior tour of the Fine Arts Building where our office is located at 410 South Michigan Avenue. The Fine Arts Building is the oldest building on Michigan Avenue, dating back to 1885. The Fine Arts Building has always been a haven for artists of all sorts, including painters, musicians, architects, and performing artists. A walk through the halls of this historic structure will inspire you as you hear the gentle strings of a violin or the echoing voice of an opera singer.
The Signature Architecture Tour of Chicago begins in our office in the Fine Arts Building at 410 South Michigan Avenue, Suite 524.
The Signature Architecture Tour of Chicago is available March 1- October 31.
